Beginner’s Guide To Surfing : What You Need

In this part of our guide to how to surf we look at what clothing and gear you need.

If you have decided to go surfing then you might think all you need is a surfboard, but your should also consider buying wax and a wetsuit.

Usually a surfboard is 2.7 meters long and 55 to 60 cm across. There are countless types of surfboards available, though most are made from polyurethane foam and covered with fiberglass. On a typical board you will find a fin on the bottom of the board and a cord, or strap, that can be attached to your ankle.

The most appropriate surfboard for beginners that provides the best balance, resiliency, and protection is one with a progressively oval shape, a curved tip, and one that is thick and wide. It’s best to borrow or rent a number of boards when learning how to surf before choosing one to buy so that you can find the one that best matches your needs.

Applying surfboard wax to your board isn’t necessary, but many surfers find that it helps. The wax is beneficial because the surface of the board is already slippery, and placing it in the water makes this even worse. It should be rubbed in the areas that your hands and feet will be in contact with.

The need for a wetsuit is mainly determined by the region in which you are surfing and your own natural resistance to cold conditions. Being continuously exposed to water depletes your body heat more readily when your skin remains wet, even though your body is working very hard while you are surfing.

The wetsuit is the best way to stay at a comfortable temperature while surfing in cold waters, plus it is only a thin layer of clothing on your body. Wetsuits don’t hinder your body movements, as they’re very elastic and lightweight. Wetsuits are also available to be rented at many popular locations for surfing.
