Solutions for getting your swimwear hang-ups off your chest
Most women can find something to complain about when it comes to their bodies, and shopping for swimwear is not usually on the list of priorities.Stripping down to a swimming costume can come close to a near-death experience. And when it comes to women who have ample breasts, the most common cry is that they can’t find flattering swimwear.
Of course, there are some who are happy to flaunt their frontage, but it’s generally those women who’ve had some outside help to increase their facade who are keen to put it on display. But the rest of us want to tone it down a bit.
No worries – there are lots of little style tips so that you can step out with confidence. It’s about knowing what works best for your particular body shape, from styles, support, fabric, strap lines, fabric colours and patterns, necklines and accessories.
The number one rule is SUPPORT.Many women who have bigger breasts make the error of selecting swimwear that doesn’t give them proper support.Look for swimwear that provides lift, support and coverage from hidden underwire or built-in bras!
Julie Wiggins, owner of leading Perth swimwear manufacturer, Viva Swimwear, says women should look for swimsuits that are sized in proper bra sizes (not S,M,L) with the bra fitting firmly across the back and the wire sitting flat on the body. She designed a unique 3-piece swimwear set, comprising a bra, top and pants which has been hugely popular with curvy woman and those looking for plus size swimwear as it’s flattering, supportive and looks great.
Check the fabric. Go for lycra or chlorine-resistant swimwear which gives stretch and support for curvy bigger busts.
Spaghetti is a no-go!Wide straps with halter-necks provide the best support and coverage.Fuller bustlines look good in racer back swimwear or sporty styles which offer more support, and high cut armholes are also a good idea!
And take the cossie for a test-drive before committing to the purchase – touch your toes (if you can) and see if your assets remain under cover!
Be a little daring. Halter tops are best for big busts.Don’t be scared to show off your cleavage either as it’s a handy way of distracting attention.V-neck halter tops are also flattering, as they divide the chest making the bust appear smaller. You can happily have a deep ‘V’ – but not a dangerously deep one! Other flattering neckline styles include sash tops, gathered tops or crossover tops.
A darker colour on the top can reduce the size of your breasts, while patterns can also distract attention from one big block of solid colour.Mixing plain colours with gorgeous patterns also works well. Vertical stripes also reduce breast size.
Perth swimwear designer Julie Wiggins says the secret to finding swimwear for the larger bust is to create an hourglass silhouette.”By accentuating a waist, we can create definition and balance between a larger top and the bottom. It’s about making the most of what you’ve got – so put your best front forward.”
