Sun Country Airlines was in their heyday during the early 90s. They had record income earnings of nearly $10 million. They had twice as many aircraft in their fleet as well as employees. All of that is to be expected when an airline is run by aviation professionals from the top down. In those days, Sun Country flew to European destinations and even began flying military charter services to various points in the Middle East. They did that and did not deviate from their core operating principle of providing superior service their customers.
After many years of hardship, it was announced late 2010 that Sun Country would take up the reins for travel from Lansing Michigan to Washington National near Washington DC. The USDOT, Dept of Transportation made the final decision and awarded Sun Country Airlines with the new route. Eventually there will be stops in Lansing, but the flight will originate from Minneapolis Minnesota.
The airline will stop at Lansing to pick up passengers and then continue to Washington DC. This is a very recent development and stops in Lansing MI have not yet begun. Plus this will eventually turn into daily flights from Lansing to Washington.
A crown in their cap was the addition of Hawaii and London as Sun Country destinations as of July of 2010. Sun Country Airlines has the Boeing 737-800 in their fleet for these flights. But that is not the first time they embarked on flights crossing the Atlantic on twin engine planes. The first trans-Atlantic crossing for Sun Country was the previous month, in June, when they departed from Minneapolis and landed in London. Sun Country Airlines is in the middle of bankruptcy reorganization, but everyone including their creditors are very optimistic. Thanks to the many years of experience in the industry, their management and employees will no doubt turn things around quickly. We all know that the global economic state was created by external factors totally separate from how they ran their operations.
